T h i s caterpillar -eats th e butterfly weed, Afclepias curajfavica.' On th e 2'4th o f
April it fufpended itfelf b y th e tail; changed to a chryfalis next day, and on the
l l t h o f May the butterfly came out. I t is n o t a very common Jpecies.
All authors have been puzzled about the varieties, as they called them, of P. Plexippus,
Chryjippus, &c. and furely the world are obliged to Profeffor Fabricius for diftinguilhing this
and many others which refemble it. If their raetamorphofes were known,. as in that before
us, we Ihould probably be itill more fatisfied of their being diftindt.
Mr. Latham informs us, that the beautiful gold fpots on the Pupa preferve their colour
even in fpirits. ■
