Case 580 x 266, overall height 476
The case is in two-tone mahogany, with two levelling screws at the
front, and one wooden support at the back. Sliding sash windows front
and back (sashes broken). Back held by a spring catch inside, the front by
peg secured inside drawer. Drawer contains: two pieces of platinum (?)
leaf; two wire riders; 100 gr. brass weight in holder. Circular bubble
level at base of pillar. Two brass pans.
Steel knife edges on beam ends, set into agate V on pan suspensions.
On right side is a scale 0 - 10 by ones, for positioning riders.
These are lifted by a bent wire on a rod,-which is supported by a post
through the centre of the case top, and to the right by a brass eyelet set
in the glass panel (panel now broken).
The beam is lifted by a rod running through the pillar with a
knurled knob at front of the case. This supports the beam on a brass
adjustable leaf with cork pads. There is a brass levelling pointer in front
of the pillar, which passes over a scale. There is a spare pan with a hook
underneath for specific gravity purposes. Supplied by Olland on 9 June
1866, for Dfl. 130.
¡.¿¿¡¡lendrik Olland (1825-1901)1 worked with Christopher
Becker at Arnhem from 1844, and in 1853 set up his own firm. In the
1860s and 1870s he regularly won prizes at exhibitions with His. balances
and meteorological instruments; Mooij (1988H126. For a signed dip
