(658, 659, 660)
658- A pair of copper wire helices contra-rotate round the poles of

Magnet supported on a brass tripod base with adjustable feet
and a central brass pillar. Overall height 298.
Michael Faraday (1791-1867) was the first to convert electrical
into mechanical motion with a similar device to show
electromagnetic rotation: “On Some New Electro-Magnetical
Motions, and on the Theory of Magnetism”; see Faraday (1822);
also Barlow (1823).
659 Signed on plaque: M. LOGEMAN fecit, AMSTERDAM.
Florseshoe magnet with pair of Ampère buckets. These are
small galvanic batteries that rotate round the poles of the magnet
by which they are supported. Overall height 190; base 120
