A Note on Dutch Instrument Makers

The instrument makers listed here are those whose products are to be
found in this Catalogue. Two-thirds do not appear in the published
works on this topic by Rooseboom (1950) or Mooij (1988).
ADMIRAAL, Cornelis (1859/1860
Cornelis Admiraal married Marretje Christina van der Vliet on 10 June
1898 in De Rijp. The marriage certificate records him as a technician,
thirty-eight years of age, born in Beemster, and living in Amsterdam.
The Adresboek Amsterdam for the years 1900-1903 gives C. Admiraal,
living at the Vondelkerkstraat, but he is not mentioned in the accompanying
list of instrument makers. Region Archives Alkmaar.
ANSLIJN, Hendricus Josinus (1826-1892)
A cabinet-maker at Haarlem, Jacobijnestraat, as early as 1860. In later
years his address was Lange Wijngaardstraat 28. In 1887 he became a
master in his craft. Adresboek Haarlem-, Municipal Archives Haarlem.
AYRES, Benjamin
The Amsterdam instrument maker Benjamin Ayres was active around
the middle of the eighteenth century. For a short period he worked for
the Dutch Admiralty with the commission to train nautical instrument
makers. The Museum has an azimuth compass with octant by this

BRÜNE, L.R.
Briine was amanuensis at the Hogere Burger School (HBS) in Utrecht.
He made demonstration thermometers for this school and for the HBS
in The Hague. There is also an example in Museum Boerhaave.
