fame: the head is full of feathers on the top and back part; colour
of that, and half the neck, a fine glofiy greenilh black : the reft of
the neck and under parts white*, tranfverfely undulated with
dulky lines on the fides over the thighs: the upper part of the
back black : fcapulars neareft the body black; the others white :
the lower part of the back, rump, and tail, brownilh alh-colour;
the feathers edged with dulky white towards the rump : the
Idler wing coverts are white, the others alh-colour, but in the
middle are white alfo : twelve of the prime quills are black;
fome of the inner ones alh-colour on the inner webs: the fecon-
dafies moftly white, and five or fix of them fringed with greenilh
black on the outer margins: the tail confifts of eighteen alh-
coloured feathers, the lhafts of which are dulky : legs orange.
The Goofander feems to prefer the more northern fituations to P l a c e a n d
thofe of the fouth, not being feen in the 1 aft, except in very fevere M a n n e r s .
feafons. Continues the whole year in the Orknies; and has been
Ihot in the Hebrides in fummer f . Common on the continent of
Europe and AJia j but mod fo towards the north. Found alfo in
Iceland and Greenland, and breeds there, retiring fouthward in winter,
at that time found about the lake Baikal. Frequent in America
: inhabits the province of New Tork in winter ; retires from
thence in April, probably to Hudfon's Bay J ; and, if the bird
called a Fijherman Duck, found alfo in Carolina,J,
