SPECIFIC CHARACTER.
HEATH, with tips two-horned at their base,
within the blossom, which is nearly globeshaped;
the empalemcnt fringed * leaves thick,
and slightly sawed.
DESCRIPTION.
STEM shrubby, half a foot high; the branches
thread-shaped and pliant.
LEAVES by threes and fours, erect and spreading,
obtuse, keeled, and slightly sawed.
FLOWERS grow at the extremity of the smaller
branches in threes or more, between nodding and
spreading; the footstalks are short, with three
fringed floral leaves pressed to the cup.
EMPALEMENT four-leaved ; leaflets egg-shaped,
scaly, and fringed.
BLOSSOM nearly globular, of a red purple;
the segments form a half round, equal and
spreading.
CHIVES. Eight hair-like threads; tips two
horned at the base, and within the blossom.
POINTAL. Seed-vessel turban-shaped. Shafl
thread-shaped. Summit four-cornered.
Native of the Cape of Good Hope.
