H E A T H , with beardless tips just within the blossom
: flowers terminal, by threes: blossom small
and bell-shaped : leaves by threes, channelled on
the under side : stem shrubby.
D E S C R I P T I O N .
S T EM two feet, shrubby, upright: small
branches grow by threes in whorls, threadshaped,
and numerous.
LEAVES by threes, upright, and obtuse, flat
on their upper surface, channelled beneath, and
of a glaucous green : footstalks pressed to the
stem.
FLOWERS terminate the branches mostly by
threes, nodding: peduncles coloured, longer
than the blossom, and furnished with three
lance-shaped, coloured, floral leaves.
E M P A L E M E N T four-leaved: the leaflets are
ovate, coloured, glandular, and pressed to the
blossom.
BLOSSOM small, bell-shaped, and flesh-coloured
; the segments of the mouth are ovate,
and sharp-pointed.
C H I V E S . Eight hair-like threads ; tips beardless,
and within the blossom.
P O I S T A L . Seed-bud turban-shaped, furrowed,
w itli honey-cups at the base. Shaft threadshaped,
without the blossom, and flesh-coloured.
