n p H I S Helvella lias a hard' .root, variable in fhape; it grows
* 011 various fubftances, I /have gathered it on lmall ¿ticks,
on herbs, and grafs in a putrid ftate, and alfo on the ground; it
is . of a very dark clove colour. T^heHurface flocky or lhaggy,
and marked Avith concentric circles of a darker colour. The w"
margin dented, curled, and waved; the dents and waves ftrongly
and elegantly ciliated, with hairs of unequal Jength.
The undcrfide is, of a paler colour, having . fwelling veins,
ftrongeft near the centre, divided and fubdivided towards the
margin, and feem as if dufted over with a brown bloom or down.
The fubftance of the plant is foft, flexible,' and tough; it foon
turns black and periih.es.
Grows in damp and moift fituations,. particul'4i;ly under clofe
plantations of larch and fir trees, 'lliele Ipeeijnens I gathered in
