r-pHIS Boletus/ in' the fpecimen before me, has a very fliort
1 ftem", which' riles obliquely,1 from the upper furfaee,' over
the defective fide of the plant, as is reprcfented in the fimple outlines
on the plate j but fometimes it adheres by its fide, and this
fpurious Item. is abfent. The furfaee is of a pale kind' of brown,
with a tinge of red, bul this, colour effects only a thin ikin or
epidermis, with which the-plant is covered, and which frequently
cracks and.peels,off in fmall patches', leaving the furfaee marked
with foots- and blotches of a.pure; w h i t e , i s the internal whole
fubftance of the plant ; when old the margin is obtufe arid rolled
in, and the furfaee of the plant highly convex. '
The lower furfaee'is'nearly plain, the pores, white and minute,
the tubes very ího-rt and white, and while fVeih may be ieparated
- from, the fleih of the. pileus.
This grew on birch trees in Sbackleton-Wood,. near lleptonjiallt
and the fame has been fent me from Darlington
