^ p H I S grow^on the ground, and from an hard tough root
.which is white;within, and •of a coriaceus fubftance : it
ihoots out feveral flat pieces, which lay on the furface of the
earth, m an horizontal direction..
In the progrefs- of growth it becomes lobed/ the lobes imbri-

The upper furface is thickly. covered with a rough hairy pile
or ihag- while the plant is young of a golden colour, changingto
an orange brown with age. The internal fubftance, at B. is,
thin, white, tough, and leathery.
