Pileus convexo-expanded, closely tomentose or floccose-scaly, opaque
tan-coloured becoming browmish ; ß e sh compact, white, dark blue when
broken ; stem stuffed with a spongy qiith, tlien hollow, ventricose, villose-
pruinose, of th e same colour, constricted above, even, w h ite ; tubes free,
minute, round, white then yellow. The sporidia pass, like the tubes, to a
yellowisli w'hite. Meadows and b a rren woods.—Fries.
Pileus floccose; tubes n o t m in u te ; spores colourless, large, furnished
with an apiculus, '00048" x 'OOOS"; stem squamose, loosely stuffed, having a
distinct bark, very b rittle , frac turing transversely. Wliole p lan t dry like
Strobilomyces, drying up in decay and n o t decomposing, changing to
qiale indigo when cu t or b ru is e d ; colour very slight and change very'
g ra d u a l; taste none. T h e specimens figured were sent to us by Cecil H. S.
Perceval, E sq., from E a s t Budleigii, Budleigh Salterton, after stormy
weather, S5th July, 1871; so th a t th e above change of colour is the
normal one.
Tlie qflant described and figured by Mr. M. C. Cooke as B . cyanescens
in ‘ Jo u rn a l of B o tan y ,’ vol. iii. t. 30, p. 141, is certainly not th a t species;
it had n o t th e curious floccose pileus characteristic of B . cyanescens, and
th e spores were n o t oval, h u t fusiform. Mr. Berkeley agrees witli us iu
considering the species here figured th e tru e p lan t of Bulliard.
