P holiota s tip itib u s farctis, basi atteu u atis, squamis confertis, innatis, revolutis,
obscurioribus, tectis ; pileo obtuso, carnoso ; lamellis confertis, subdecurren-
tibiis, e pallido-olivaceo ferrugiueis.
Pileus fleshy, obtuse, damp, pallid, with adpressed scales, three to five
inches w id e ; stems densely crowded, very numerous, usually coherent at
th e base, stuffed, equal as far as the annulus, covered with crowded revolute
s c a le s ; rmg very ne a r to th e apex of th e pileus, ra re ly membranaceous,
entire or more often laciniated, the same colour as th e s c a le s; flesh yellow,
compact when y o u n g ; gills adnate, with a d ecurrent tooth, crowded,
narrow. On rotten h e e ch-stems; odour foetid.—Fries.

to four lines thick, equal, firm, incurved, often eccentric, smooth, n o t scaly,
ye llow ; ring inferior, reflexed, approaching th e pileus, stem mealy ab o v e ;
fle sh compact, p a llid ; gills adnate, crowded, moderately broad, plane,
yellow, at length ferruginous. T ru n k s of living trees, solitary.—Fries.
