P holiota stipite farcto, curvato, subæquali ; amiulo submemhranaceo, a pileo
parum distante ; pileo gibbo, carnoso, squamis adpressis maculæformibus
obscurioribus ; lamellis sinuato-adnexis, primo albidis, demum subfuscis.
Pileus fleshy, hell-shaped th e n convex, compact and expanded in th e
disc, gibbous, th re e to five inches wide, damp, scarcely viscid, with darker
adpressed spot-like scales ; stem stuffed-, about th re e inches long, h a lf an
inch or more thick, nearly equal, generally curved, clothed with adpressed
floccoso-fibrous ferruginous scales, a t len g th n early bare, fibrous, tu rn in g
yellow ; annulus cottony from th e inflexed margin of th e pileus, submem-
branaceous, placed n e a r th e pileus ; gills sinua to-adnate, broad, crowded,
a t first whitish th e n straw-coloiu’ed, a t len g th chestnut, h u t never verging
on olive; flesh b o th of th e qiileus and stem white th e n yeUow ; spores
ferruginous. H a b ita t, tru n k s of green trees, especially willows ; somewhat
cæspitose, or solitary, almost scentless.—Fries.
Pileus b rig h t yellow, gradually changing to b rig h t sienna from th e
margin towards th e apex, covered with b rig h t sienna adpressed scales
arranged in zones ; stem solid ; gills brownish horn-colour, close and to u g h ,
spores b rig h t yellowish umber. H ab ita t, growing in dense tufts, th e pilei
closely packed one over th e other. I n patches on an ash tre e , Pevensey
