P leurotus stipitibus cæspitosis, elastieis, intus spongiosis, pallidis ; pileo plus
minus eccentrico, tenui, testaceo, absque pellicula secernibili ; margiue ele-
ganter crenato-lobato ; lamellis totis adnatis.
Pileus more or less eccentric, sometimes gublateral, fleshy, thin, at
length almost membranaceous at th e margin, flaccid, plane, three to six
inches wide, glabrous, with no separate pellicle ; margin a t first involute
th en evolute, elegantly crenato-lobed and fimbriate ; stem solid, firm, elastic,
spongy within, very unequal, thickened at th e base or equal, an inch to
th re e inches long, twisted or compressed, h a lf to one inch thick, pallid,
generally glabrous or slightly villose a t the base ; gills entirely adnate, not
sinuate, obtuse behind, very th in , crowded, narrow, at length lacerated,
shining ; flesh thin, watery, white when dry. H ab ita t, th e ro tte n tru n k s of
tre e s ; cæspitose ; a very handsome and d istinct species.—Fries.
Pileus pale fawn-colour, regularly and broadly furrowed, concave when
fully grown, the centre covered with rad ia tin g adpressed tomentum ; stem
pale buff, very stout, thick, solid and eccentric, curving upwards and
covered with velvet-like pubescence ; gills pale pinkish white or cream-
coloured ; flesh white. F u n g u s much eaten by slugs.
