g ro o v ed ; flesh firm, white ; gills strongly decurrent, simple, two to three
lines wide, somewhat crowded, white h u t tu rn in g p a llid ; stem solid fleshy,
n o t elastic, two to three inches long, slightly attenuated below, somewhat
fibrillose, ivhite tu rn in g yeUow. N e a r fir trees, very good when dressed. —

Pileus smooth, leathery, umbonate with the edge even and in c u rv e d ;
gills ra th e r c lo s e ; stem solid or s tu ffed ; flesh w h ite ; odour sweet and
pleasant. Growing in large patches, singly or two or th re e together,
amongst grass on the road-side. Greenings, Nov. 1808. We do not agree
with F rie s in makmg th is p lan t a variety of A . geotrupus, b u t consider it a
good sp e c ie s : its h abit is quite different, and th e f ru it is distinct. The
spores of A . geotrupus are shown at Fig. 4, and those of A . subinvolutus a t
Fig. .3 ; sometimes, however, th e former have a very slight tendency to
become spinulose.
