P leurotus pileo primitus resupinato, e.x peltis orbicularibus excentricis formato,
mox lateraliter protracto, auriformi, sursum glabro ; lamellis in umbonem
concuiTentibus, angustissimis ; carne tenui, compacta.
Pileus at first resupinate, sessile, th en adnate, consisting of eccentric
orbicular shields, th e gills running into th e umbo, b u t soon drawn out
laterally, th en ascending, ear-shaped, narrowed a t th e base, wider above,
fleshy, tenacious, flaccid, at length lobed, one inch to four inches wide,
smooth, suhglabrous, b u t more or less tomentose towards th e b a s e ; flesh
th in , com p a c t; gills a t first concurrent, suhvenous, decurrent with the
pileus, th in , crowded, linear, very narrow, sometimes divided. Inodorous,
insipid. On p ine-trunks.—Fries.

Johnstone, who found the qilant growing upon decayed qiine-wood in th e
gi'ounds of th e Duke of Argyll, Invera ry.
