P leurotus pileo primitus resupinato, villoso, atro-cæruleo ; lamellis confertis,
latis, albidis, demum flavescentibus.
Pileus a t first resupinate, b u t soon refiexed, horizontal, obovate or
reniform, an inch to two inches wide, villose, rarely glabrous, generally
atro-cæruleons, ra re h ’ fuscous ; stetn none ; gills a t first concurrent then
touching th e base, broad, whitish, at length yeUow ; flesh soft, the pellicle
gelatinous, two lines thick, fuscous, th e proper flesh thinner, whitish.
H ab ita t, on beech and p oplar tru n k s in very shady places, sessile, gregarious,
giving out a very agreeable odour.—Fries.

Pileus rare ly central, generally more or less eccentric, or even entirely
lateral, often reniform, fleshy, th in b u t compact and tenacious, obtuse and
often umbilicate, an inch to four inches wide, flocculoso-pruinose, cream-
coloured, margin a t first involute th en expanded, when lu x u ria n t undulate
and lobed ; stem stuffed, thin, hollow, from th re e to four lines to two to
three inches long, always thin, unequal, curved, tenacious, flexible, w'hitish,
pruinoso-villose, rooting, subtomentose at th e base ; gills adnate, very
crowded and narrow, unequal, diverging, shining ; spores unusually small
for a Pleurotus. H ab ita t, tru n k s of tre e s and rotten wood. A very variable
plant, with a th in substance and strong odour of meal, generally densely
cæspitose, h u t sometimes single.—Fries.

Gulson, of Eastcliff, T e ig nm o u th ; th e former from Bitton Wood, near
Teignmouth ; th e la tte r from Bagtor, where it grew parasitically on a
ro tte n p lan t of Polyporus annosus, F r., on an elm.
