This is a genus worthy of cultivation in all
collections, as its lively flowers are produced
in great abundance and at all seasons ; many
species are now in onr collections ; the most
si)lendid is iridijidra, which is amongst the
handsomest plants of the stove ; ricli light soil
suits the species best ; they are propagated by
divisions at the root, or by seeds, which tliey

produces tha lienip. The hemp to which we
owe so many of our comforts is 0, saüva, Neither
is handsome, and they require only to be
sown in the open ground and kept clean. A
most powerfully narcotic gum resin is obtained

eatable mushrooms. The best way of preserving
them for use, is to string them in rows,
and after they have become flaccid, to hang
them in a dry phice where they can have plenty
of air. They then form a delicious ingredient

CÁNTUA, Jitss. From cantu, the name of one
of the species in Peru. Linn. 5, Or. 1, Nat,
Or. PoUnionidceoe. This is a genus of beautiful
shrubs, requiring an airy greenhouse, and very
much the same treatment as Fuchsia. Ü.
huxifhlia is the magic tree of the Peruvian
Indians, and was formerly used to decorate
their houses on feast days. Loam, peat, and
sand is the best soil, and the species are easily
increased by cuttings. Synonymes: I, Periphrdgmos

Capparidàceoe. This is a genus of ornamental
low shrubs ; they grow Avell in a mixture of
loam and peat : and cuttings root iu sand, in
heat, under a glass. C. spinósa is a good freeflowering
spccies, when allowed plenty of room.
The ilower-buds of the caper form a wellknown
])ickle ; they are stimulant, antiscorbutic,
and aperient ; and the bark is said to be

climbing and twining habit of the phint.

is a genus of favourite climbing plants, well
adapted for planting against walls, bowers, or
trellis-work. Common soil suits them ; and
cuttings taken oif early in autumn readily root
