These curious plants grow Avell in
a mixture of sandy loam and peat, with the
pots well drained. They require to be kept
dry when not in a growing state.

PdpuLUS, Tonrnefort. Some derive the w^ord
Populus from paipallo, to vibrate or shake ;
others suppose it obtained its name from being
used in ancient, times to decorate the public
places in Eome, Avhere it was called arbor p6-
puli, or the tree of the people. Linn, 22, Or.
7, Nat. Or. Salicdcece. Most of the species of
poplar are very ornamental, more especially in
early spring, when the catkins of the males
are produced. Their favourite place of growth
is in moist soil near a running stream ; but
they do not thrive in very marshy situations.
All the species are readily increased by cuttings
or layers, and some by suckers. Synonymes:
