LOPHIRA, Banks. One of the sepals is extended
out into a ligulate wing or crest; Avhence the
name, from lophos, a crest. Linn. 12, Or. 1,
Nat. Or. Dipierdcem. This is a very fine lowgrowing
tree. It has tap-roots, and therefore
requires to be planted in a very deep pot, in
order to allow the roots to descend. It should
be grown in sandy loam and peat, and kept
rather dry ; cuttings of the ripened wood will
root in sand, under a glass, in heat. In Sierra
Leone, it is called Sciirhy or Scmhhy Oalc.

Or. Fabàcem. An ornamental genus of plants.
The greenhouse and frame species grow ireely
in any light soil, and are increased by cuttings
of the young wood planted in sand, under a
glass, or they may be increased by seeds. The
hardy kinds are well suited for ornamenting
rock-work, or di-y banks. The seeds of the
hardy annual species, need only be sown in the
open gi-ound in spring. L. eorniculàtus and
L. màjor are sometimes sown with white clover
and cow-grass, in laying down permanent
