The species of Vibûrmtm are all
very elegant, rather early-flowering shrubs.
The hardy kinds arc well litted for planting in
ornamental shrubberies. They are increased
b y layers, or by cuttings, planted under a
glass, iu a shady situation. The fruit becomes
eatable after fermentation, and is made into a
sort of cake by the North American Indians.

species of this genus are well worth cultivating
in the flower border for the beauty oí
their llowers. They are of the easiest culture
iu any common garden soil. The peremual
kinds inay be readily increased by dividing
the root or by seeds. The seeds of the annual
kinds only require to be sown in the open
border in spring. 7. sativa and its varieties
are extensively cultivated, and well known by
the common name of vetch, or tares ; they are
used as food for all kiuds of cattle, and are
allowed to be more nutritive and profitable
than hay or any other herbage. Synonymes :
