have as many as twenty stamens.

ILEX, Linn. Käme originally from the Geltic,
ÖC, or ac, signifying a point ; on account of
the prickly leaves. Linn. 4, Or. 3, JSTat. Or.,
Aqidfoliàceoe. A genus of trees and shrubs
well known for their elegant character, evergreen
prickly foliage, and their adaptation to
lawns. Many varieties have resulted from culture,
which are distinguished by the variegation
and size of the leaves, and the colour of
the fruit. They grow well in any soil, but
best in a dryish situation, where there is a
good depth of loam. They are increased by
budding or grafting on the comnron kinds ; but
cuttings of the ripened wood will root under a
glass, in a sheltered situation. I, paraguénsis
is used as tea, and yields the famous beverage
called Maté in Bi^azil. Synonymes: 1, Ilex

ILLECEBRICE^, or KNOTW^ORTS. An order
very near Amaranths and Cloveworts. The
greater part are herbaceous plants or halfshrubby
species, and none are remarkable for
beauty.
ILLÉCEBRUM, Linn. From Illecehra of Pliny,
which is derived from illicio, to allure ; pretty
enticing plants. Linn. 5, Or. 1, Nat. Or.
Illecehràceoe. Interesting dwarf plants, I,
mrtieillatum is found in England in boggy
places, and is very pretty. They grow in any
soil, and increase from seed without diííiculty.
