MAXILLÀRIA, Ridz and Pavón. So named in
consequence of the resemblnnce between the
column and labellum and the jaws or niaxillre
of some animal. Linn. 20, Òr.-1, Nat, Or.
Orchidcxccoi. This is an extensive and very
elegant genns of jdants, all of which are highly
deserving of cultivation, either for the beauty
or delicious fragrance of the ilowers, M.
Steèlii is not only a very remarkable, but a very
beautiful plant ; the ilowers are large, of a fine
yellow colour, irregularly spotted with dark
purple. This, and several other species, as
M . aciciildris, imhricMay racemosa, and M.
o'uféscens, should be grown on wood, on which
a little moss should be placed, theii the roots
of the plant put on that, with a sufficient
quantity of moss, and the whole fastened to
the wood with some metallic wire. For the

species of this genus will grow in any
common garden soil, and are increased by dividing
the plants in spring at the roots. The
shrubby kinds grow in the sanie kind of soil,
and are readily increased by cuttings. The
seeds of the annual species require to be sown
