W IL L O W OAK.
Ph. NoShia fpiiilinguis crifiata, alis dentatis cinereo-nebulolis; pofticis fupra nigris margine
denticulato albo.
F e ed s on th e Willow-leaved and other Oaks. I t Ipun on th e lo th o f May, and
came out on th e 16th o f June. This is not a very common fpecies, th ough th e fly
may fometimes be met w ith on the bodies o f large oaks.
Great affinity is obfervable between this infedt and the Phalana Fraxini of Europe, but the
latter is fomewhat larger, the hind wings more remarkably and Angularly toothed, with a
broad bluilh ftripe acrofs their dilk.—NoQua Epione of Fabricius, Entom. emend. V. 5 . 5 8 , is
allied to both, as well as his N. mercatoria.—The fame author has a Bombyx Vidua, which is
no other than Phaheua Parthenias of Linnasus, a name we fee no reafon for changing; and as
that of Vidua is peculiarly applicable to ours, confidering the analogy of other Ipecies, we
make no fcruple to take it.
