T h e caterpillar o f this noble moth feeds on the Plane Tree: (crroncoufly called Sycamore
in Georgia), Oak, l.u fw d um b u r and Pine trees. , It went into the. ground
September lBth, and came out Ju ly 4th. Some o f thefe caterpillars are taw n y like
a negro,, feme orange and tawny, others green. T h ey are not. common, an d are
th e m o t difficult o f all to bring to perfection in confinement, as th ey w ill n o t eat
in th a t fituation ; and even i f th ey change to a chryfalis, th ey die afterwards. I
once law one o f thefe moths on th e win g much larger th an th a t in th e plate.
Trivial names ending in alts being proper to the Pyntles, we have made a flight alteration
in this. We have alfo removed it from the divifion oSBombjca alls dtjlesis on account of its
manifeft affinity with the three following, and thence with the PMamafMaria, &c. efl.in-
naius, though neither we nor Profeffor Fabricius have feen it with its wings clofed, and.
therefore cannot be abfolutciy certain on,this point.
