the ground Ju n e 20th, came out th e 14th o f July. Another w e n t in the 17th of
October, and came out the 25th o f April. The caterpillar is n o t unfrequent in
autumn, b u t is very hard to preferve through all its changes, dying for th e moll
part in its chryfalis Hate during winter. Confequently the moth is rare, and has
not I believe been obferved in Virginia.
The name which Cramer has heedlefsly given to this moth, having a termination which
is exclufively appropriated to the Tortrix tribe, ana, could not- by any means be retained,
efpecially as it is totally unmeaning. We have changed it for one expreffive of the fcorched.
appearance of the wings.
We can find no difference between this tree and the Carpmis OJlrya of Italy arid Germany,
notwithftanding Miller fufpedls them to be diftindt fpecies.
