T h is caterpillar wa s taken feeding on th e Pride o f China» b u t its moft common
food is o f th e oak-kind. I t fpun among the leaves May 2; and came out the 28th.
T h e moth ma y often be found fitting on the trunks-of large oaks, and is a native
o f Virginia as w e ll as o f Georgia.
In this fpedes the fexesdife-more than ufual in the colour of their upper wings. From
the beautiful male our charadler is taken, according to general cuftom in infefts as well as
birds; but it applies alfo to the female as much as poffible.
