T h e caterpillar was taken feeding on the Chionanthus, o f which it eats chiefly the
blofloms. I t w e n t into the ground the 2d o f May, and appeared on th e wing September
27 th. T h e mark like the letter O on each upper wing, charadterifes the
moth, which is very ra re in Georgia, and n o t found in Virginia a t all.
This has fome affinity, efpecially in the larva, to. thofe we h^ve juft defcribed, and alfo to
the typica and feveral others of Linnaeus, The moth fomewhat refembles his ocularis.
Botanifts will be glad to fee fo good a reprefentation, as Mr. Abbot has here given, of the
beautiful fruit of Chionanthus, which is never produced in our gardens.
