T h e caterpillar feeds on the Oak Runner, and other Oaks. I t Ipun itfelf up
April 28th in a pale yellowifli web, and the fly appeared May 15th. T h e female
has very fmall wings, or ra the r only rudiments o f wings, like th e Englifh V apour-
ers ( P h a la n a a n tiq u a e t g o nojligm aj; y e t th e larger chryfalis here reprefented
belongs to th e female, fo much bigger is h e r abdomen th an th a t o f th e male. This
is alfo a Virginian infect, b u t is not very common.
Every thing fliews the affinity of this with the Europaean moths juft mentioned, and it
Should be inferted immediately before P. antiqua in the Linnaean fyftem. We do not find any
author has noticed this fpecies nor the two preceding.
This Oak can fcarcely be referred to any thing elfe than the Water Oak, of which it is
probably a variety; at leaft we have not materials fufficient to charadterife it as a diftindt
lpecies.
