came o u t th e 1 2 th o f June. W h e n this caterpillar has done feeding, it defcends
from the leaves to th e body o f the tree, and ftretches itfelf, in th e pofition here re-
prefented, upon th e bark, which it fo much refembles in colour as hardly to be
difcernible from it.
This has been thought not fpecifically diftindt from Linnasus’s Ph. paranympha, figured in
Roefel, Pol. A. 1.18, but we have ventured to prefume that it is fo from its greater fize, the
wings being more evidently dentated, with a row of black dots near their margin, the outer-
moft black ftripe of the under wings being uninterrupted, and the innermoft not recurved
back to the bafe at the abdominal margin.
