T he caterpillar was taken on th e Timber W h ite Oak, b u t feeds alfo on other Ipe-
cies o f Oak. I t w e n t into the ground and enclofed itfelf in a th in cafe o f d irt July
15 th , appearing on the win g Auguft 7th. Sometimes this Ipecies alfo buries itfelf
in 'autumn, and remains till the fpring, a t which feafon the moth - may n ow and
th en be obferved fitting on th e oak branches. This kind is found alfo in Virginia,
though far from common.
In this figure the leaves are lefs deeply lobed than ufual in the Quercus alba, but we believe
it to be a mere variety.'
