30th o f April, and came o u t th e 16th o f May. This kind is fometimes fo plentiful
in V irginia as to llrip th e oaks bare, b u t i t is n o t very common in Georgia.
' It is not without extreme caution that we refer any of thefe American infects to European
fpecies,- but in the prefent inftance there can be no room for doubt; and indeed the climates
of the two countries- are not fo very different as to make it highly improbable that the fame
infedls fhould fometimes inhabit both.
This fpecies varies much in the tone of its colour, as may be feen by the figures of Efper
above quoted,' and thofe of Roefel V. 1. Thai. 2. t. 6.
The plant before us is certainly Quercus aquatica of Dr. Solander, and comes nearefl to
that variety of it marked y in the Hortus Kewenfis.
