Philip was married 26 July, 1554, and on the same day
received the investiture of Naples. On the 16th of January,
1556, Charles Y. resigned to Mm the kingdom of Spain;
between these periods this piece must have been struck. It
is, however, not a medal but a coin (a carlino) for circulation
in Naples; and various dies have been used which slightly differ
from each other. Giovanni Baptista Ravaschiero was director
of the Mint at Naples in 1554.

The titles show that this piece must have been struck soon
after the marriage of Philip. It is a coin (a ducato), not a
medal; and has no other connexion with England than the title
of Philip.
