 This medal is awarded  in  bronze  for excellence,  and in  silver  
 for  special  excellence,  in  an  essay on some  subject  connected  
 with  Shakespeare’s  plays.  The  bronze medal has been  several  
 times  awarded;  but  the  silver  only  in  four  instances  since  
 1858.
