with many small bracts and 2 or 3 flowers. Flotoers '6 to '75 in. in diam.; pedicels
yellowish-tomentose, with 1 bracteole. Sepals connate into an open 3-angled cup, tomentose
outside, glabrous inside. Outer petals ovate, tomentose outside, puberulous inside
except at the glabrous base; inner petals rather broader than the outer, pubcscent
outside, glabrous inside. Stamens in three rows, short, broad, flat; the connective
scai-cely produced above the lateral anther-cells. Ovaries oblong, compressed, strigose;
o\-ules 10, in two rows; style very short, glabrous; stigma small. Ripe carpels 4 to 6,
broadly ovoid, pointed, puberulous, r 2 to 1'5 in. long ; stalk thick, '25 to -4 in. long.

branches softly tomentose but speedily glabrous dark-coloured and striate. Leaves
coriaceous, drooping, oblong to oblong-elliptic, shortly acuminate, the base slightly
cuneate or rounded; both surfaces glabrous, reticulate, the midrib pubescent on the lower
when young; main nerves 14 to 18 pairs, slender, spreading, inter-arching freely within

broadly ovate, acute, tomentose outside, glabrous inside. Petals thick, sub-equal, ovateoblong,
tapering to the sub-acute apex, sub-cordate at the base; the inner, rather shorter,
pubescent on both surfaces, but rather loss .so on the inner, -4 to -5 in, long. Stamens
broad, flattened, slightly apiculate. Ovaries numerous, oblong, tapering to the apex,
densely pubescent, multi-ovulate ; stigma sub-sessile, capitate. Ripe carpels ovoid, yellow
when ripe, minutely pubescent, 1-5 to 2-5 in. long and 1-2 to 1-75 in. in diam. Seeds

oblong, blunt at each end, densely covered with minute tawny tomentum, 2 in. long and

Maingay's specimens (Kcw Disti-ib. No. 107) in f m i t only and with some detached
leaves, and which have hitherto remained undetermined, appear to me to belong to this
species; and it is from these that the fruit of this species is now for the first (ime
described.
