parts glabrous except the leat-buils and the floivors ; j-oung branches slender, darkcolom
od. lawes thinly coriaceous, lanooolate, snb-acuminate ; the base acute; main
nerves about 10 pau'S, very faint, sub-horizontal, reticulations obscure ; length 3-6 to
4 in., breadth -To to 1-1 i n . ; petiole -10 in. Flowers axillary, solitary; pcdicols -25 in.
(lengthening in fruit),, pubescent, bractoolate at the base. Sepals broadly ovate, subacute,
adpressod, rufous-pubescent like the petals, '2 in. long, persistent. Fetals
coriaceous; the outer broadly ovato, sub-acute, -70 in. long; the inner broadly ovate,
acuminate or trapezoid, one-half shorter than the outer. Ooaries pubescent ; ovides 1 or
5 ; style biüd. Fäpe carpels bub-sesaile, oblong, slightly pointed at the base and apex,

2 to 3 feet high ; young branches stout ; the bark rather pale, striate. Leaves thickly
membranous, flavescent, obovate-oMong or obovate-lanceolate, abruptly caudate-acuminate,
narrowed from the middle to the acute base; the edges slightly recurved when dry;
main nerves 8 to 11 pairs, spreading, inter-arching rather far from the edge, slightly
prominent beneath; both surfaces faintly reticulate, the lower very pale, beneath when

reticulate, narrowly oblong to" oblong-Ianceolate, shortly and abruptly acuminate, the

Dahell, who originally described this species, says the mner petals, when fresh,
are marked with' the figure of a heart; hence the specific name.
