6 ANNALS OF THE EOYAL BOTANIC GARDEN, CALCUTTA.
in 3 series, nearly equal, usually orbicular, very concave. Stamens 6—21, imbricate in
2 or more series, broadly oblong, thick, fleshy ; anthcr-cells dorsal, obloug, connectives
produced. Ovaries 3—6; style short; stigma obtuse or capitate; ovules 6 to 8, on the
ventral suture. Ripe carpels globose or ovoid, stalked. Distrib.—Species 6, tropical
Asiatic.
A genus closely allied to Bocagea, St. Hilairc, but diSering from that in having its
sepals and petals much imbricate instead of valvate; in bearing more ovules, and more
seeds in its ripe carpels; in its anther-cells being moro lateral and not so entirely dorsal
as in Bocagea, and in the apical process of the connective being truncate. The flowers
of Siigeroea are small and the sepals and petals are very concave; and in these respects,
as well in the comparative fewness of the seeds in their ripe carpels, they diverge from
those of typical Uuarieco. Hooker Jîlitis and Thomson (in their Flora Indica), Bentham
and Hooker (in their Genera Pîantanmi), and Bâillon (in his Histoire des Plantes, Vol.
I . 202, 281) retain Sageroea as a genus,—an example which I would have followed
-without any hesitation had not Sir Joseph Hooker united it with Bocagea in bis
Plora of British India. The extreme imbrication both of the sepals and petals appears
to me, however, in spite of Sir Joseph Hooker's more recent view, so insurmountable
an argument against its reduction to a genus in which both these sets of organs are
very distinctly valvate, that I adhere to his earlier view that Sageroea should remain
distinct and take its place in the tribe XJvarieoe,

1, SAGERÍEA ELLIPTICA, Sook. fil. 8f Thorns. Fl. Jnd. 93. A large tree; all parts
glabrous except the ciliate perianth ; young branches rather stout, angled. Leaves
coriaceous, narrowly oblong, acute (obtuse when very old) ; the base narrowed, obtuse
or minutely cordate, oblique ; both sui-faces shining ; main nerves 14 to 16 pairs,
preading, faint ; length 8 to 12 in., breadth 2'25 to 3*5 in. ; petiole '15 in., very
thick. Flowers monoecious, solitary and axillary, or fascicled on tubercles on the larger
branches, small, red ; pedicels '20 in. long, with several basal and medial bracts.
Sepals small, semi-orbicular, glabrous, ciliate. Petals thick, ovate-orbicular, concave,
tubercular outside, glabrous, the edges cOiate, •25 in. long; the inner smaller than the
outer. Stamens 12 to 18, the connectivo sub-quadrate at the apex ; anthers extrorse.
Ovaries in female flower about 3, glabrous ; ovules about 8. Ripe carpels sub-scssile,
globose, glabrous, 1 in. in diam. Seeds several. King in Journ. As. Soc. Bengal 61,

2 SAGEEÍEA LISTERI, King n. sp. A tree with pale, fibrous, deciduous bark; young
branches rather slender, pale; all parts, except the flower and ripe fruit, glabrous.
Leaves coriaceous, elliptic-oblong to elliptic, shortly acuminate, the base cunéate or
rounded; upper surface shining; the lower dull, darker than the upper when dry; main
nerves G to 8 paii-s, curved, spreading, very faint; length 3-75 to 5-5 in., breadth 1'5 to
3-5 in.; petiole '4 in. Flowers sub-globular, solitary, axillary, sessile, -3 in. in diam.;
bract 'close to flower, sub-orbicular, pubescent outside. Sepals much imbricate, very
concave, orbicular, whitish, pubescent outside, glabrous inside, -15 in. in diam. Petals
like the sepals, but larger and more densely pubescent outside; the inner row rather
smaller than the outer. Stamens 9, the connective broad, flattened, not produced at
the apex; anther-cells lateral, extrorse. Ovaries (not seen). Ripe carpels broadly ovoid,
nan-owed to the base, minutely pubescent, 1 in. long. Seeds about 12, in two rows,
flattened.
Chittagong Hill Tracts,—Zwier, Seintg.
This closely resembles S. elliptica, but has smaller leaves with fewer nerves and
fewer stamens; while the carpels are ovoid, not globose. Its timber is said to be of
excellent quality.

3. SAGER^EA THWAITESII, Hook. fil. ^ Thorns. FL Ind. 93. A glabrous tree; young
branches rather stout, dark-coloured. Leaves coriaceous, elliptic to elliptic-oblong, the
base sub-cuneate, rarely rounded; both surfaces faintly reticulate; main nerves 10 to
12 pairs, spreading, very faint; length 5-5 to 14 in., breadth 2-35 to 375 in.; petiole
•5 in., channelled. Flowers bisexual, "6 to '75 in. in diam., sub-globular, pale orange,
fascicled on the larger branches; pedicels "75 to 1 in. long with • several bracteoles
at the base. Sepals ovate-orbicular, sub-acute, glabrous; outer petals larger than the
sepals and than the inner petals. Stamens about 24; the anthers large, dorsal; the
connective transversely elongate and truncate at the apex. Ovaries 3, glabrous, oblongovoid,
about 7-ovuled; style very short; stigma grooved. Ripe carpels globose, smooth,
•75 in. in diam.; stalks '15 in. Seeds compressed, broadly grooved. Thwaiiei Enum. 0;
