2. MITREPHORA JIAINGAYI, Hook. fil. ^ Thorns. Fl. Br. Ind. i. 77. A tree 20 to 50
feet high; yoaiig branches softly rufous-tomentose, afterwards glabrous, dark-coloured and
striate. Zeam coriaceous, oblong to ovate (oblong-lanceolate in var. Ji^ursii), acute or
shortly and bluntly acuminatc, the base rounded or sub-cuneate; upper surface shining,
glabrous except the pubescent midiib; nnder-surface glabrescent, the midrib and nerves
thinly adpressed-pubesceut (pubescent in var. Kurzh)] main nerves 6 to 10 pairs, oblique,
curving, slightly prominent beneath; length 3 to 5'5 in., breadth 1'5 to 3 in.; petiole
to '-i in. Flowers 1 in. or more in diam., axillary or leaf-opposed, solitary or 3
or 3 in a multi-bracteolate and tomentose raceme; pedicels -5 to 1-5 in. (lengthening
with age), bractcolate. Sepals connate into a cup, broadly ovate, acute (or obtuse in
var.)j tomentose. Fetals rather thin, pale yellow mottled with red, all more or less
pubescent outside; the outer orbicular or obovate with undulate erose edges, slightly
narrowed at the base (oblong in var. Kiwzii) ; inner shorter ; the outer veiy pubescent
inside, vaulted, ovate or cordate with a long linear claw. Anthers numerous, short, with
broad, flat, smooth tops. Ovaries gradually narrowed into the short style; ovules 4;
.stigma sub-capitate-discoid. Ripe carpels broadly ovoid, blunt at each end, densely tomentose,
1 in. long- and -To in. in diam. ; their stalks stout, '70 in. long. Seeds 4, compressed.

A large tree; young parts minutely golden-pubescent. Leaves thinly coriaceous, elliptic or
ovate-lanceolate, shortly and bluntly acuminate, shining and glabrous above, glabroscent
beneath; the axils of the nerves glandular and hairy; main nerves 6 to 8 pairs,
spreading, slender; length 4 to 5 in., breadth I'O to 2-5 in.; petiole 'O in. long.
Fedunoles 2- to 3-flowered, leaf-opposed, with a bract below each flower. Flowers 2 to 3

in. in diam., sub-sessile. Sepals small, ovate, acute. Outer petals broadly elliptic, acute,
1 'to 1-25 in. long and from -6 to -8 in. broad, adpresscd-pubescent outside, glabrous
inside, white turning to yellow; inner petals smaller, cuneate, acute, clawed, white
streaked with rod, deciduous. Carpels globose or ovoid, with a prominent vertical
furrow, -75 to I in. long, minutely tomentoso. Seed solitary.

slender, pale, minutely pubescent at first, but speedily glabrous. Leaves thinly but flrmly
coriaceous, ovate-lanceolate, the base rounded or very slightly cuneate ; both surfaces pale
when diy (the upper sliining, the lower dull), much i-eticulate, glabrous, the younger
leaves sparsely pubescent beneath; main nerves 6 or 7 pairs, veiy faint, inter-arching
far from the margin; length 2 to 3 in., breadth -8 to 1-35 in.; petiole -15 to -2 in.
Flowers 1 to 1-25 in. in diam., solitary or in leaf-opposed sub-racemose cymes; pedunclcs
very short, the bracts minute, distichous; pedicels -25 in. long, with small bracteoles.
Sepals minute, orbicular, puberulous outside. Outer petals yellow, cuncate-lanccolate,
acuminatc, parallel-veined, puberulous on both surfaces; the inner trapezioid, acuto,
clawed, yellowish with red spots, pubescent, -4 in. , long. Anthers numerous, with broad
flat or concave heads. Ovaries 0 to 9, strigos3, 2- to 4-ovided; stylo short ; stigma
sub-capitate. Ripe carpels few, obovoid or sub-globose, naiTowed to the base, densely and

feet high; young branches tawny-tomentose, ultimately glabrous and dark-coloured.
Leaves narrowly oblong, often slightly obovate, acuminate, the base cuneate or rounded;
both surfaces shining, reticulate, glabrous ; the midrib puberulous on the upper, sparsely
setose on the lower, surface ; main nerves 12 to 14 pairs, spi-eading, prominent, distinct
beneath ; length 5 to 14 in., breadth 2 to 4-5 in. ; petiole -25 in., swollen. Flowers -2
in diam., in. axillaiy, solitary, or in pairs, or in few-flowered pubenalous cymes ; pedicels
long, slender, with many lanceolate bracteoles. Flowers, as in M. maerophyUa, moncecious.
Ripe carpels ovoid, apiculate, rugose, hoary, -8 in. long and -65 in. in diam. Seeds 2.
