sub-eoneave, sparsL'ly pubescent. Stamens numerous; the ajñcal process of the connective
sub-convex, orbicular, slightly granular. Ovuries much fewer than the stamens, oblong,
pubescent; the stigma sub-capitate-truncate, puberulous. Ripe carpels globular-ovoitl, blunt
at each end, puberulous, -4 iu. long; stalks slender, '2 in. long. ¿.Wife 2, plano-convex;

Evidently a rare shrub; readily recognisable by its elongate, very búllate leaves.

small tree ; young branches sparsely hispid-pubescent, afterwards glabrous and fuirowed,
not pale. Leaves membi-anous, sub-sfssile, oblanceolate-oblong or elliptic-oblong, shortly
and obtusely caudate-acuminate ; the base slightly narrowed, sub-cordate, auriculate at
one side ; botli sui-faces glabrous except the sometimes puberulous midrib ; main nerves
9 to 12 pairs, slender ; the reticulations las and faint ; length 4*5 to 9 in., breadth
1-6 to 3 in. ; petiole '05 in., pubescent. Flowers about 1 in. in diam., solitary, axillary
or extra-axillai-y ; peduncles slender, '5 to -75 in. long, puberulous and with 1 or 2
lanceolate bracteoles. Sepals ovate, sub-acute, united into a cup. Petals coriaceous,
yellowish, oblong, sub-acute ; the inner rather smaller, slightly pubescent outside. Ripe
carpels numerous, broadly ovoid, not apiculate, furrowed, glabrous, -4 in. long; stalks

or small tree 10 to 15 feet h i g h ; young bi-anches at first rufous-tomentose, afterwards
glabrous, pale and furrowed. . Leaves thinly coriaceous, sub-sessile, oblong or oblongoblanceolate,
abruptly and shortly acuminate, narrowed to the minutely cordate unequal
base ; upper surface glabrous, except the pubescent midrib ; lower puberulous, tlie midrib
prominent as are the 14 to 20 pairs of little curving, sub-ascending, main nerves ;
reticulations open and distinct; length 9 to 14 in., breadth 3-5 t o 5 in.; petiole -15 in.,
tomentose. Floioers 1-25 to 1-75 in. in diam., solitary, axillary or extra-axillary, from
small tubercles; pedicels 1-25 to 2-5 in. long, puberulous and with 2 lanceolate bracteoles

near the base. Sepals semi-orbicular, acute, very short, united into a cup, pubescent
outside. Petals coriaceous, yellow, sub-equal, oblong, tapering to the sub-acuto apex,
minutely ad pressed-pubescent on both surfaces, but especially on the o u t e r ; length -75 to
1-15 in. Ripe carpels 10 to 20, ovoid to orbicular, apiculate. '3 to '35 in. long, pubescent
or sub-glabrous; stalks slender, -6 to '75 in. long. Seeds usually solitary and ovoid, or
sometimes two and plano-convex. Guatteria midtinervis, Wall. Cat. 0445.
Perak : very common at elevations of from 1,000 to 2,500 feet. Penang,—
No. 1409. Distrib.—Borneo,—-ScccaW No. 1621.
This plant closely resembles Guatteria {—Pohjalthia) clliptieu, Blume ; but its leaves
have more numerous neiwes and its carpels are stalked, those of P. cUiptica (according
both to Blume's description and figure) being sessile and of larger size.

15 to 40 feet h i g h ; young branches slender, rufous-tomentose ; the older coarsely striate
and lenticellate. Leaves thickly membranous, nai-rowly pblong or oblong-lanceolate,
acuminate, slightly narrowed to the rounded b a s e; both surfaces shining and reticulate ;
t h e midrib pubescent on the upper, tomentose on the lower ; main nerves 6 or 7 pairs,
slender, spreading, forming bold arches far f r om t h e edge; the secondary nerves distinct;
length 3 to 4-5 in., breadth -75 to l'3o in.; petiole -1 in., tomentose. Flowers 1 in.
long, in fascicles from bracteolate tubercles on the older branches; theii- pedicels slender,
pubescent, mimitely bracteolate near the base, about 1 in. long. Sepals ovate-obtuse,
•15 in. long, pubescent outside. Petals coriaceous, dark yellow, sub-equal, linear-oblong,
sub-acute, 1 in. to I'o in. long and from '1 to '2 in. broad, minutely pubescent,
especially outside. Ocaries pubescent, 2-ovulcd. Ripe carpels numerous, broadly ovoid,
apiculate, glabrous, sub-granular -when ripe, •35 in. long; their stalks granular, puberulous
•6 to '70 in. long.

The leaves of this species, although smaller, have much the same venation as those
of P. Teysmannii, King. The cai-pels of this are, however, very much smaller than
those of P. Teysmannii.
