young branches grey-tomentose, the older daik-coloorod, striate. Leaoes membranous,
broadly ovate-oblong or sub-orbionlar, obtuse or mueronate, the base trnncate or subcordate;
upper surface adpressed-pnbescent, becoming glabrous, tho midrib and nerves
tomentose to pnboscent; undor-surface softly cincrous-tomentose; main nerves 7 to 9 paii's,
broad, straight, ascending obliquely and, like the veins and reticulations, rather promment,
ospeeially beneath; length of blade 2 to 5 in., breadth l-6a to 3-5 in.; petiole -i m.,

the leaf-buds silky; young branches slender, leaves membranous, narrowly oblong or

bracteolate and jomted near the base, slender, from 1-25 to 8 in. long, still longer

Most of the specimens wliich I have seen from Assam, the Khasia Hills, and Cliittagong
have flower-pedicels under 2 inches long, and petals quite 6 inches long. Specimens
from Perak, oa the other hand, Lave shorter flowers (3 to 4 in. longj and much longer
(5 or 0 in.) and more slender peduncles; otiierwise the two sets agree. In many of
the flowers from both sets of localities there are only two petals.

mfous-pubescent and sometimes peraianently so. Leaves thinly coriaceous, elliptic-oblong,
oblong, or oblong-lanceolate or oblanceolate, acute or shortly acuminate, the base rounded
or narrowed; upper surface glabrous; the lower sub-glaucous, glabrous, or sometimes
pubenilous-on the midrib and nerves; length 4-5 to 8-5 in., breadth 1-5 to 3 in.,
petiole about -1 iu. Flowers pedunculate, solitary, axillary, pendulous, 1-5 to 3 iu. long;
pedimcles 1-25 to TTo in. (longer in fruit), minutely bracteolate at the veiy base.
Sepals fleshy, very short, broadly triangular, pubescent, reflexed. Feta¿s fleshy, varying
from ovate-acute to lanceolatc-acuminate, concave and (in the narrower forms) expanded
at the base, with a constriction between the claw and limb; the edges united when
young, adpressed-puberulous, but ultimately glabrous. Anthers with the connective
expanded at the apex and oblique. Ovaries densely villous; the stigma narrow, glabrous.
Ripe carpels munorous, shortly stalked, monilifonn, pubescent to glabrous; the joints oval,
