branches sparsely and softly rufous-pubescent, the bark brown. Leaves thinly coriaceous,
oblong-lanceolate to oblong-ovate, bluntly acuminate, the base rounded; both surfaces reticulate,
glabrous and shining, the midrib tomentose on the upper; main nerves about
12 pairs, veiy faint, spreading and fomiing double arches inside the edge; length 2-5
t o 4: in., breadth -6 to 1'25 in.; petiole '1 in. Floioers few, in short, extra-axillary
racemes, sub-giobular, '25 in. in diam.; pedicels about as long as t h e flowers, each with
2 sub-orbicular, stein-clasping, pubescent bracteoles. Sepals orbicular, concave, puberulous
on both sui-faces, about -15 in. in diam. Petals sub-equal, about twice as large as the
sepals, orbicular-ovate, sub-acute, cordate at the base, the edges incurved. Stamens
• about 27, in thi-ee rows; anther-cells linear, lateml; the apical process of the connective
obliquely truncate, papillose. Pistils numerous, fomaing a large mass with their stigmas
agglutinated. Ovaries sub-cunoate, pubescent, especially near the truncate apex; stigma
v e r y large and viscous, sessile; ovule.s 1 to ¡i, ascending. Bipe carpels ovoid, pointed,
glabrous, -4 to '5 in. long. Seeds 1 to 3, compressed ; the testa pale brown, shining.

I n its leaves this much resembles Cvaria micrantha, II. f. & T., as which I have reason
to believe some specimens of it have been distributed from the Calcutta Herbarium.

branches slender, cinereous-tomentose. Leaves thickly membi-anous, i-ather broadly lanceolate,
acuminate (those on the lower parts of the tree smaller and ovate, acute), the
bases of all slightly narrowed, rarely rounded; upper surface glabrous; the lower
irranular, tomentose on the midi-ib and 4 or ó pairs of ascending indistinct main nerves ;
Feno-th 1 to 2-7Ô in., breadth -6 to 1 in.; petiole '1 in., granular and pubescent.
Flolers solitary, extra-axillary, -35 in. in diam.; pedicels -1 to "2 in., tomentose, Avith
a median bracteole. Sepals small, connate below, ovato, acute. Petals coriaceous,
tomentoso outside, glabrous inside ; the outer larger tlian the inner, ovate-rotund ; the
inner more acute, apices not inflexed. Stamens numerous. Ovaries 4 or 5, h a i r y ; ovules

young branches tawny-tomentose. Leaves sub-coriaceous, elliptic-lanceolate, shortly caudateucujmnate,
the base sub-acute; upper surface glabrous, except the puberulous midrib;
lower densely covered with yellowish-grey tomentum as are the petioles; main nerves
11 to 18 pairs, rather prominent beneath, cui-ved, spreading, inter-arching close to the
margin; length 4-5 to C-5 in., breadth 1'6 to 2 i n . ; petiole -2 in. Flowers solitary, -35
in. in diam. ; pedicels -2 in,, tomentose. Sepals minute, ovate, obtuse. Petals unequal ;
t h e outer ovate-elliptic, obtuse, yellow; the inner slightly larger, apiculate, concave, the
margins thick. Stamens about 30; the connective large. Ovui-ies about 6, strigose,
2-ovuled. Ripe carpels few, veiy large, oblong-ovoid, obtuse, sessile, densely and shortly

I give the locality Penang on the strecgth of an imperfect specimen recently
received from Mr. Curtis (No. 2768). Good flowering and fruiting specimens of this
rather obscure species are much wanted.
