Of this variable and abundant species, Sn" Joseph Hooker distinguishes four
varieties as follows
VvK. 1, ftibiflora. Leaves 5-7 in., oblong, acute, base often cordate; flowers
álky.
VAK. 2, Imifjata. Leaves 3-4 in., oblong or lanceolate, acute, base rounded;
flowers almost glabrous. U. chinensis, DC. Prodr. i. 90.—U. undulata.

with a large, broadly ovate, acmninate bract below tho middle. Sefals membranous,

slender, softly i-ufous-tomentose. Leaves membranous, broadly ovate to oblong-ovate,
obovate to oblanceolate-obleng, obtuse, sub-aeute or broadly nmcronatc ; the base rounded
or sub-cordate, or sub-cnneate; when young i-ufous-tomentose'on both sm-faccs; the uiiper,
except the midrib, giabrcsccnt when old; main neives 10 to 13 pairs, sub-ascending,
1-ather sti-aight; length 2 to 5'25 in., breadth 1-25 to 2-5 in.; petiole 'lo in. to l-o in.,
rufous-tomentose. Flowers solitaiy, leaf-opposed or exti-a-axillaiy, 3 to 2-5 in. long;
pedicels -5 to '75 in. long, nifous-tomentose, with a single ovate bract near the base.
Sefals coriaceous, cordate or ovate, sub-acute or acute, spreading, infous-tomentose, -4
in. long. Petals obovate-spathulate to broadly ovate-lanceolate, tapoiing to eaeli end,
vertically nerved, densely pubescent at first, less so when old; the inner row .smaller.
Rife earfels numerous, stalked, glabrous, -73 to M in. long, much constricted between

The form which occurs in the Malayan Peninsula has narrower petals than that
which is found in Assam and Sylhct, and its leaves are more oblong and less ovate.

length 2-5 to 3-5 in., breadth 1 to 1'2 iu.; petiole •! to -2 in., pubescent. Fiowers
solitary, extra axillary, I'o to 2'5 iu. long; pedicels about 1 in., slender, sparsely strigose,
with a single ovate bract below the middle.. Sepak ovate-acuminate, spreading or reilesed
