pcdicels shorter than the peduncle, puberulous, ebraoteolate, '3 to '4 in. long. Sepals
triangulai'-ovate, connate at the base, reflexed, puberulous outside, glabrous inside. Petals
yellowish-white, sub-equal, oblong, oblique, tapering gradually to the sub-acute apes ; the
base broad, suddenly narrowed and slightly pouched, puberulous, '5 in. long; the inner
slightly smaller. Stamens in 3 rows; filament very short j connective with a short apieulus.
Ovaries 4 or 5, oblong, adpressed-pubescent; OTules many, in two rows; stigma sessile,
sub-capitate. Ripe carpels unknown.
Perak: elevat. 500 feet,—Zw^-'s Collector Nos. 5387, 7119 and 7516.

6. ALPHOXSEA SOB-DEHISCEKS, King in Journ. yls. Soc. Bengal 61, pt. 2, 126. A shrub
or small tree; young branches rather slender, puberulous at first but speedily becoming
glabrous. Leaves thinly coriaceous, oblong-lanceolate to elliptic, shortly and rather
bluntly acuminate, the base rounded or sub-cuneate; upper surface glabrous except the
2)uberulous midrib; the lower reticulate, sparsely puberulous or glabrous; main nerves
about 10 pairs, spreading, very faint; length 4 to 6 in., breadth 175 to 2'3 in.;
petiole '2Ó in. Floioers globular, scarcely opening, -25 in. in diam., solitary or in . pairs,
slightly supi-a-axillary, on short pedicels, with several large sub-orbicular pubescent braeteoles.
Sepals thick, fleshy, connate into a flat cup, '3 in. in diam., with three broad
obtuse spreading lobes. Petals larger than the sepals, thick, hard and fleshy, valvate,
orbicular, acute, concave; outside tawny-pubescent, inside glabrous except near the
apex; the outer '2 in. in diam., the inner row rather smaller than the outer. Stamens
numerous ; the apical processes large, fleshy, conical, concealing the apices of the
narrow linear anther-cells. Torus conical. Pistil solitary, clavate, minutely puberulous,
many-ovuled ; stigma minute. Itipe carpels elongate-clavate, puberulous, 1 to 1'25 in.
long, tapering into a stalk '25 to -3 in. long. Seeds about 10.

The dried fruits of this species sometimes open longitudinally by a sort of quasisuture
; hence the specific name.

7. ALPHONSEA CYLINDRICA. King in Journ. As. Soc. Bengal 61, pt. 2, 127. A small
tree 20 to 30 feet high; young branches with long, soft, pale-brown pubescence, ultimately
glabrous, cinereous, striate. Leaves thinly coriaceous, ovate-lanceolate, sometimes oblanceolate,
shortly and bluntly acuminate; the base rounded or sub-cuneate, slightly oblique;
upper surface glabrous, shining, the midrib pubescent; the lower dull, sparsely pubescent
on the iñidrib and nerves; main nerves 7 to 9 paii-s, spreading, faint; length 2*5 to 3'5
in., breadth 1*1 to To in.; petiole "15 in. Flowers '35 in. long, single, or 2 or 3 from
leaf-opposed or extra-axillary peduncles; peduncles '15 to '4 in. long, with deciduous
distichous sub-orbicular bracts; pedicels "2 to '35 in, long, pubescent, each with 1
bracteole near the base. Sepals semi-orbicular, blunt, connate at the base, tomentoso

saccate base to the sub-acute apes, tomentose outside,, minutely puboscent inside cxcept
a glabrous patch at tho base, '35 in. long. Stamens in 3 rows with short broad filaments.
Anthers ovate, the connective very slightly apiculate. Ovaries 3, oblong,
densely pale-yellowish sericeous, with many ovules in two rows; style short; stigma
bifid, sub-capitate. Ripe carpels 1 or 2, elongate, terete, tapering to the ajjcx, pubescent
or puberulous, nearly 1 in. long and only '2 in. in diam.
Perak; on Ulu Bubong, elevat. 400 to 600 ioQi,—King's Collector No. 10633.
A species resembling A. suh-dehiseens in its narrow cylindric fruit.

A t r e e ; all pai-ts glabrous except the flowers and fruit; young branches pale, lenticellate
and striate. Leaves coriaceous, elliptic-lanceolate, sometimes ovate or oblong, obtuse, the
base sub-cuneate; both surfaces glabrous and inconspicuously reticulate, the lower paler;
main nerves 5 to 7 paii-s, spreading, very f a i n t ; length I'B to 3 in., breadth '85 to 1-2
i n . ; petiole '25 in., rugulose, sub-puberulous or glabrous. Flowers yellow, in leaf-opposed
or extra-axillary fascicles of 2 to 6 ; pedicels -25 to '5 in. long, puberulous, with a
bract below the middle. Sepals small, ovate, pubescent. Petah sub-equal, ovate, bluntlj'
acuminate, pubescent externally, glabrous within. Stamens in two rows, compressed, veiy
slightly apiculate. Ovaries oblong, truncate at the apex, tapering at the base, pubescent;
ovules 8, in two rows; style sub-globose, sub-sessile. Ripe carpcls ovoid-globose, slightly
apiculate. tawny-tomentose.
Mysore and the Carnatic,—Beddorae.
A species very near A. sclerocarpa in flowers and loaves, but with smaller nontubercular
fruit. It has been collected only by Colonel Beddome.

puberulous but speedily glabrous striate and dark-coloured. Leaves small, coriaceous,
narrowly lanceolate, acuminate, the base acute; upper surface glabrous, shining; the
lower dull, the midrib pubcmlous when young; main nerves 10 or 12 paii-s, spreading,
inter-arching widely within the margia, veiy faint; length 2'25 to 3 in., breadth -ó
to 1 in.; petiole '2 in. Flowers few, in leaf-opposed or extra-axillaiy fascicles,
yellowish-green, '5 to '65 in. long; pedicels pubescent, '25 to '5 in., with a small
basal bracteole. Sepals connate for half their length, broadly ovate, sub-acute, tomentose
outside, glabrous inside, reflexed when ripe. Petals sub-equal, -5 to -65 in. long,
ovate-acute, puberulous outside, glabrous inside; their apices reflexed. Stamens in several
rows, compressed, with a slight conical apieulus. Ovaries few, oblong, 4- to 6-ovulcd;
style short, tliick; stigma tmncatc. Eipe carpels ovoid, obtuse, tomentose, slightly
tuberculato, or not tuberxjulate, 1 in. long .and '65 in, in diam.; their stalks stout,
