slender, at first softly rufous-tomentosej afterwai-ds glabrous, striate, and dark-coloured
•with pale warts. Leaves thinly coriaceous, oblong-lanceolate, acuminate, the base rounded
or slightly cuneatc ; both surfaces glabrous exccpt the rufous-pubcsccnt midrib ; main
nerves scarcely visible (oven when dry), 12 to 15 pairs, spreading; length of blade 2-5 to
5-5 in., breadtU -8 to l - i in. ; petiole ' l o in. Peduncles terminal or extra-axillary, very
short, 2- to 4- flowered, softly rufous-tomentose ; bracts more or less orbicular ; buds
globose, slightly pointed, '15 in. in diam.; flowers '-i in. in diam. Sepals sub-rotund,
densely pubescent outside, sub-glabrous inside. Petals broadly ovate, sub-obtuse, granular
and minutely tomentose outside, pubescent inside. Eipe carpels numerous, stalked, ovoidglobose,
rounded at each end, glabrous, 2- to 4-seeded. Seeds plano-convex, smooth.

As regards leaves, this closely resembles Popowia niiida, King—a plant of the
Andaman and Nicobar Islands; and there is reason to believe that some specimens
of that Popowia from those islands have been issued from the Calcutta Herbarium
as Uvaria mkruntha. I am also of opinion that Uvaria siimatronn, KUI'Z Andaman
Report., 29, and of Hook. fil. ^ Thorns. Fi. Br. Ltd. i. 51, is possibly Popotoia nitida,
King.

rufous-tomentose; speedily becoming glabrous, cinereous and striate. Leaves coriaceous,
small lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, rather bluntly acuminato or acute, the base
cuncate, rarely rounded ; both surfaces quite glabrous ; the upper shining, the lower
dull and dark-coloured, the midrib prominent on the lower surface; the 8 to 10 paii-s
of spreading, slender nerves almost invisible on either, even when dry ; length 2-25 to
3 in. breadth '75 to I'L i n . ; petiole '1 in. Peduncles terminal or extra-axillaiy, '3 to -4
in. long, rufous-tomentose, 1- or 2-flowered ; bracts 1 or 2, small, oblong, scaly or
glabroud; budi ovoid-globose or globose, '15 in. in diam,; flowers -65 to '8 in. in diam.
Sepah membranous, rotund-ovate, sub-obtuse, spreading, minutely scaly. Petals much

climber ; young branches slender and (liko the petioles) sparsely stellate-pube,scent,
speedily' becoming glabrous and dark-coloured, leaves thinly coriaceous, oblonglanceolate
or oblanceolate, shortly rather abruptly and obtusely acuminate, the base
rounded or sli-htly cuncate; both surfaces glabrous; main nerves 10 to 12 pair.s,
spreading, rather faint ; length 3 to 6 in., breadth 1-5 to 2 in. Peduncles exti^-axxllary
or terminal very short, about S-flowered, densely covered with rusty scurfy tomentum
as are the ' 1 to 3 rounded bracts; buds sub-globose, beaked; flowers 1 to l-7o in.

in the lower third. Petals longer than the sepals, oval-oblong, sub-obtuse, their apices
