scabrid on the upper, soft oa the lower, surface; the midi-ib and 10 to 15 pairs of
spreading curving slightly prominent main nerves softly rufous-stcllate-to mentóse on
both surfaces; length 3 to 5 in., breadth 1'3 to 2 in.; petiole '15 in., stellatetomentose.
Flowers '75 to 1'2 in. in diam., 2 or 3 together in short supra-axillary cymes;
pedicels stellate-tomentose like the outer surface of the calyx, -3 or -i in. loug, with a
large, orbicular, amplesicaul bracteolc. Sepals orbicular, connate into an obscurely
3-toothed spreading cup '4 in. in diam., glabrescent inside. Petals spreading, sub-orbicular
to broadly oblong, very blunt, sub-equal, rather thin, minutely pubescent on both surfaces
but especially on the outer, dark reddish-brown. Stamens numerous (the outer row
converted into sub-quadi-ate staminodes), compressed, broad, without filamouts; the apical
process of the connective broad aud flat; anther-cells on the edges of the connective,
linear. Ovaries numerous, crowded, elongate, narrow, conipressed, ridged, minutely
stellate-tomentose; the ovules numerous; stigma sessile, short and broad, fleshy, obliquely
truncate. Ripe carpels ovoid or obovoid, blunt at both ends, minutely pubescent, 1-2 to
1-5 in. long; stalks nearly 1 in., stellate-tomentose. Seeds numerous in two rows,
horizontal, oval, compressed, pale brown, shining.

shrub; young branches softly rufous-tomentose. Leaves thickly membranous, oblong or
elliptic-oblong, sometimes slightly obovate, sub-acute or rather obtuse, t h e base sub-cuneate;
upper surface densely adpressed-pubescent, the hairs short and silvery, glabi-escent when
o l d ; under-aurface softly stellate-tomentose; main nerves 9 to 12 pairs, oblique,
inter-arching close to the edge, prominent beneath as are the transverse veins; length of
blade 3-5 to 5'5 in., breadth Vo to 2'5 i n . ; petiole -25 in., tomentosc. Flowers 1 in.
t o l'2o in. in diam., tei-minal or leaf-opposed, usually solitaiy, sometimes in pairs;
pedicel '35 to '5 in. long, its bracts oblong or lanceolate, deciduous. Sepals coriaceous,
broadly ovate, sub-acute, spreading, conjoined at the very base, softly tomentose outside,
glabrescent inside. Petals coriaceous, slightly unequal, broadly ovate; the outer and
inner row sub-similar, densely covcred with pale grey tomentum. Antk&'s short,
(iuiieate; the connective prolonged above their apices, much thickened, rounded or
quadi-ate-truncate. Carpels about 10, shortly stalked, oblong-cylindric, tapering to the
iipox, smooth, shining, '4 to '5 in. lung and '2 to '25 in. in diam. Seeds about 2, ovoidj

A species badly-represented in collections.- Mr, Clarke's f r u i t i n g specimens (collected
since the order Anonacece was treated of in the Flora of Brit. India) show that this
is a t r u e Uoaria aud not an Eilipeia, there being more seeds than one.
