A COMMON annual on fandy fea-(hores, flowering from
June to September, and making a very ornamental appearance.
From an inconfiderable root rifes a very bu(hy branched
Item, fpreading in every direction, with branches fo zigzag and
twifted there is fcarcely a ftraight line about them. Leaves
alternate, thick and fucculent, rather glaucous, fmooth, more
or lefs deeply pinnatifid and toothed, their fegments all obtufe,
each tipped with a minute, feemingly glandular, point. Flowers
in denfe terminal corymbi, which afterwards grow out into
fpikes. Their habit is fomething like thofe of a Cheiranthus,
but the Angular pod characterizes the genus as well 3s the
fpecies. Its form is ovato-lanceolate, with four (harp edges,
but comprefled fo that two oppofite edges are much the moft
prominent; their interftices are ribbed, but not (as in fome
fpecies) tuberculated. Seed Angle. The pod or pouch falls
oflF when ripe, leaving a Angular quadrangular receptacle.
This plant abounds with alkaline fait, and has the pungent
muftard flavour pf its clafs.
