U L V A protuberans.
Prominent-seeded L ave r.
CRYPTOGAMIA Algae.
Gen. Char. Frond membranous or gelatinous. Seeds
solitary, scattered throughout its substance, under
the cuticle.
Spec. Char. Gelatinous, thick, angular, green. Seeds
elliptical, at length prominent and deciduous.
T h is extraordinary production was discovered growing among
moss, on wet shady parts of the sand-rocks at tlckfield, Sussex,
by Mr. W. Borrer, in September 1813.
It consists of an assemblage of thick, fleshy, juicy, angular or
wrinkled lobes, of a light pellucid green. The seeds are about
the size of red-poppy seed, but elliptical, green, scattered separately
throughout the internal substance, as well as copiously
prominent through the external surface, from which, when ripe,
they easily separate on being touched. These characters induce
us to refer the plant in question to JJlvu, rather than to any
other known genus.
