apt. I may remark that the antients in general were fond of the
number T h r e e ; and the Gauls * are known to groupe their deities
very frequently in triplets: a number the moft complete, as,
it regards, beginning, middle, and end.
X V . Another groupe of three very Angular figures; each with a
pointed hood, a fort of breaft-plate hanging loofely, and their
feet and legs cloathed. In the right hand o f each is a ftone.
Thefe feem to have been a rude fpecies o f foldiery, who fought
with ftones'; but whether Britijh, or foreign barbarians, auxiliary
to tht Romans, is not certain.
Among the antiquities of other kinds is a very beautiful fmall
figure o f a female in brafs, whofe drefs folds with peculiar elegance.
By the rudder in her hand, it feems to have been a F or.
TUNE.
A fmall brazen Hermes or 'Terminus: as it is ornamented with
feftoons and fruit, it probably was deftined to guard the limits of,
orchards or gardens.
Two brafies: one with die head of a female, with a large tur-
band-like head-drefs. The other is the head of Jupiter.
A fmall brafs cafe, probably defigned for a thin medal 1 a filver
brotche: a fmall pair of pincers, for the purpofe o f extirpating
hairs ; a praftice much in ufe among the Romans.
A moft elegant urn, found full o f alhes: a ftrong velfel of
mixed metal, feemingly a mortar: a glafs bead, the ovum anguu
num o f the Ramans, and Glain naidr of the Britons: this has a
