la tte r gentleman considered i t to be new to science, and proposed to call it Alcyone cincta,
and th is name was p rin ted on th e plate, before it was discovered th a t Mr. E y to n ’s bird was
identical with L a Fre sn ay e ’s species.
^The members o f th e genera Alcyone and Ceyx differ much in th e ir liabits. The
species o f Alcyone seem to be almost entirely piscivorous aud more allied to Alcedo,
while th e Ceyces a re almost wholly insectivorous and seldom feed on fish. I believe th a t
Mr. Gould’s new Ceyx philippinensis will be found really to belong to the genus
Ceyx, alth o u g h I have late ly seen two specimens, one in th e British Museum, and the o ther
from Coimt T u ra ti’s collection, which have th e bill more elongated and th e gonys less
distmctly ascending th an in the ty p e specimen, which is accurately figured in my p late of
th e species.
A t p resen t n o thing is known o f th e h abits o f Alcyone cyanopectus, n or has its precise
locality y e t been ascertained. I t will I th in k be found iu the more southern islands of the
Philippine group.
I have tak en my description from Mr. E y to n ’s specimen, th e same which Sir Wdliam
J a rd in e described and th e figure is drawn from a fine b ird in th e Leiden IMuseum.
