the neck, thi’oat and u pper p a rt of th e breast, whitish tinged with pale s ie n n a ; a band
across th e upper p a rt o f th e b rea st and th e flanks, deep indigo tin g ed ivith b rig h te r blue
ou th e la tte r ; abdomen and u nder wing-coverts rufo u s; bUl brownish-black, th e lower
mandible tin g ed with orange. Total len g th 5 inches, o f b ill from front 1.4, from o-ape
1.7, iving 2.5, tail 0.7, tai’sus 0.3, middle toe 0.3, hin d toe 0.2.

The p resent species was described by the late Bai-on de L aF re sn a y e as a Ceyx in 1840.
Ten ye ars afterwards a specimen was received by Mr. E y to n from th e Philippines, and was
sent to Sfr William Ja rd in e for description in th e “ Contributions to Ornithology.” The
